Observations from the World of Sports: Feb. 14

Is last year's number one curse going to commence this season? After Ohio State went down, Kansas became the number one team in America. And what happened?

-This. Kansas gets absolutely mauled by Jacob Pullen and Co. (A.K.A. Kansas State) in the Octagon of Doom, 84-68. This game was not even close. Pullen, who's had his weakest season and been amid the numerous trouble of K. State, including being suspended for 3 games and claiming he "doesn't do the NIT," seemed to just put that all behind him in more than doubling his Big 12 points average in scoring a career-best 38 points to stun the Jayhawks. Here's an incredible stat from ESPN: "Pullen's total was just one point shy of the 39 that Elvin Hayes scored for Houston against No. 1 UCLA in 1968, which Kansas State research indicated is the most ever scored in a victory over a top-ranked team." A team has a good chance of winning when shooting as well as the Wildcats shot, a damn good 56%. And chances are you'll lose if your leading scorer is Tyrel Reed with 14, who only is being thrust back into the starting lineup with the injury of Josh Selby, who's due back any game now. The Morris twins, Markieff and Marcus, got in early foul trouble and never got off on the right foot. Marcus clawed his way to a tough, grinding 13, but Markieff had one of his worst games of the year with only 3 points. And he did not have a single rebound; remarkable, considering he is the leading rebounding in the Big 12. Jordan Henriquez-Roberts and Rodney McGruder were the only other scorers in double figures for K. State. Pullen went 9-17 from the field, including 5-6 from trey land, and 15-19 from the charity stripe.

-Syracuse ended a 3-game home skid with a solid defeat of the West Virginia Mountaineers, 63-52. Syracuse was down 30-26 at half, with the Mountaineers burning the Orange with 7 bombs in the first half to open the lead. Syracuse's defense tightened up in the second half, allowing only 4, all from Casey Mitchell. The last 3 from Mitchell would be the last field goal in the final 5 minutes of the game, as well as the last points scored for WV. Mitchell led all scorers, coming off the bench for 23 points that saved WV from totally getting blown out. He went 7-12 from downtown. Brandon Triche paced the Orange with 20.
