Observations from the World of Sports: Feb. 13

Besides the X game, there were also other high-profile games being played, obviously.

-Duke easily handled Miami, 81-71. While Duke never controlled a big lead, they were clearly in control for most of the game. Nolan Smith notched 18 points, mostly with a swollen and bothersome left eye that was inadvertently poked, and Seth Curry continued his solid play with 16 for the Dukies. Kyle Singler added 14 and Mason Plumlee 10.

-Georgetown defeated Marquette after being down at half, 69-60. Austin Freeman was greeted with the crowd chanting his name after hurting his ankle during the first half. He struggled to a gritty, tough 17 points, also helped by Chris Wright's 20 to lead Georgetown. Marquette got it within 3 with a steal and layup by Darius Johnson-Odom with 1:50 left, but Georgetown was able to seal it. With the loss, Marquette loses their 10th game and tumbles into the muddled middle of the Big East.

-Including Duke and Georgetown, all of the top 25 teams won their matchups: Connecticut vs. Providence, Purdue with a quality win @ Illinois, Arizona @ Arizona St., and Minnesota @ Iowa.

-My predicted tailspin for the Bearcats is beginning, with a 59-57 loss against St. John's at home. Stunningly, St. John's didn't score a field goal in the final 9 minutes, but clutch free throws at the end sealed it for the Red Storm. Yancy Gates, I've decided, is a complete jackass. He was seen pouting on the bench, bitching about people playing his position. Yancy, get your goddamn attitude in gear. As Dan Wimberg just said, "His bitch-ass should be in the NBA by now." He has the talent and the athleticism, but he is just too damn immature. He makes DeMarcus Cousins look like a gentleman during his only season at UK.

-Siena's tailspin in the MAAC continues, losing to a pathetic Manhattan team, 84-81. George Beamon for Manhattan had a career-high 35, and Siena hasn't won since their previous game at home against Manhattan on February 3rd.

-Fairfield is showing their poise, continuing to win close games that go down to the wire by edging St. Peter's, 70-69 in overtime. St. Peter's got it to OT with a layup by Wesley Jenkins with 18 ticks left. Jenkins ended up with only 5 points, dropping his PPG on the season to 13. Fairfield went 9-10 from the foul line in OT to wrap the game up, and their leading scorer Derek Needham led with 18. Jeron Bellin led all scorers with 22.

FUTILITY UPDATE: Houston Baptist (3-21, 2-6 Great West) fell to the D3 East Texas Baptist Tigers, 65-64. Man, a damn D1 team should not be losing to D3. This is pathetic. Jeremy LaGarde for the Tigers had a layup with 5 seconds left to clinch the game. Andrew Gonzalez of Houston Baptist led all scorers with 26 points and 9 boards.
