Observations from the World of Sports: Feb. 11

Yesterday was a very slow day for college basketball, with only 13 games being played, exclusively from the Ivy, MAAC, A-Sun, Southern, and SWAC conferences. The brevity of the post will be offset by the absolute monstrous length of tomorrow's post, with 141 games being played. It's gonna be a beast. However, there was a big development in the NBA yesterday, with a team that everyone knows sucks finally WINNING.

-THE CAVS WIN! THE CAVS WIN! HOLY CRAP! The Cleveland Cavaliers, who have showed just how good LeBron James is by setting a record in futility with 26 straight games lost, defeated the Los Angeles Clippers in overtime, 126-119. Antawn Jamison went off with 35 points, and JJ Hickson also played some excellent basketball, notching 27 and grabbing 14 boards. Also, check this absolute rejection by JJ. To see it well, click the link at the top to go to the site, then hit full screen to see it in HD.

And to just rub salt in the wound, Mo hit a huge transition 3 off the block. I guarantee Blake will posterize JJ later this season, however.

-Iona held off Siena at home to keep them in the top half of the MAAC standings, 69-65. Iona this season is a very good 3-point shooting team that gets very streaky, but shot relatively poorly, going only 9-27, which left Siena in the game.

-In the Ivy league, all the teams with a better conference record held serve, with the exception of Penn, who lost to Cornell in OT, 82-71, to fall to 3-2 in Ivy play. Cornell advances to 2-5.

-There were two medium surprises in the MAAC, however: Loyola (MD) lost at home to Niagara, 59-57. Also, Rider, who in their last game defeated conference-leading Fairfield, fell to Canisius, 67-65, at home. Fairfield is in utter control of this conference now. The aforementioned Stags held off Manhattan 65-56.
