Observations from the World of Sports: Feb. 12

Yeah, I'm late. And many huge things have happened over the past few days...let's start with Saturday.

-Ohio State goes down! Undefeated no more, they fell to Wisconsin 71-67. Something had to give: Ohio State was undefeated on the year, and Wisconsin hadn't lost at Kohl Arena all year. Turns out, the more important streak was broken. Things really looked down for the Badgers, since they were down by 15 in the second half with a surging Ohio State, and the energy got sucked out of Kohl. Enter Jordan Taylor. Taylor had 27 points (21 in the second half), including 8 straight with two clutch treys and a layup during their 15-0 run to storm back into the game. William Buford led OSU with 21, but it seemed to be the Badgers' day, and you felt that when Mike Bruesewitz, a 6-6 F with long, curly, flaming red hair, put the nail in the coffin with a 3.

-Texas had to hold off a fiesty Baylor squad at home to get a tough-earned win, 69-60. Lacedarius Dunn had 22 points in the second half for the Bears of Baylor, for a total of 26. Dunn needs 11 points to become the top scorer in Baylor history, and 78 points to become the top Big 12 scorer. Texas' leading scorer, Jordan Hamilton, led with 17 points. Freshman Tristan Thompson also tallied 17 and grabbed 13 boards.

-Pittsburgh asserted itself as the power of the Big East, with a tough-as-nails win at Villanova, 57-54. Without Ashton Gibbs (still out with the MCL injury), Brad Wanamaker and Nasir Robinson stepped up big time, especially considering they hail from Philly, where Villanova is located. Wanamaker led all scorers with 21, and Robinson pulled down 7 big boards. It also didn't help that Nova was without their leading trey man as well, as Corey Stokes was out with turf toe. It was a chippy and rough game, with multiple scuffles and technicals being called.

-San Diego St. staved off a very good challenge from UNLV in Las Vegas, 63-57. SDSU was down 55-54 after a layup from Tre'Von Willis, but the Aztecs held off the Runnin' Rebels with good free throw shooting, going 9-10 in the final two minutes. This was SDSU's last probable challenge before their rematch with BYU.

-Notre Dame, BYU, Utah State, Missouri, and Saint Mary's all easily took care of business, defeating their unranked opponents by at least 10. In the ND-USF game, Notre Dame had an early 22-0 run to go up 24-3.

-On the other hand, Louisville held off Syracuse at home, Vanderbilt defeated road-woeful UK in Nashville, and North Carolina, Florida, and Texas A&M edged their unranked opponents by slim margins.

-Other noteworthy games: West Virginia held off a late surge from fiesty, but winless, DePaul, 82-71. The game was closer than the score, with several free throws down the stretch. South Carolina scored 9 points in the first half, and were down 28-9 at halftime, but almost caused Georgia to blow a 23-point lead en route to a 60-56 loss. Mississippi State's trainwreck continues, with a loss to bottom-dwelling Auburn, 65-62. Coastal Carolina extended their winning streak with a tough 61-56 win against Winthrop. Coastal Carolina was down 9 at half, but scrapped their way back into it and pulled out the W. Kansas St.'s collapse continues with a 56-54 loss to Colorado. Yeesh.

CENTENARY WATCH: The Gentlemen lose, yet again, getting blown the hell out against the 'Roos of UMKC, 91-58. Centenary is now 0-27, and 0-15 in conference. GO GENTLEMEN...make your college proud. One student was quoted as saying, "As a Centenary student..I think it's probably better for my reputation to just sit home and hang out...However, I've got my brown paper bag in hand incase I decide to hit up the game."
